Milk is a lucrative product and has become an integral source of income for many households. Dairy production contributes to food security, generates income, and supports crop production through traction and manure.
Dairy Farming is an important source of livelihood for approximately one million small-scale farmers, two-thirds of whom are women and young people. For most farmers, especially during the dry season, milk is the only constant income.
Historically women in Kenya have been dedicated to the task of milking and getting dairy products to market. Thus, Maziwa Kwa Maisha would like to work alongside these cultural trend and use this opportunity to enable women to become financially independent.
It has been shown that women spend almost 90% of their income on their families. Economically robust women will invest in education, food and healthcare.

Why Sudan Sorghum Hybrid Grass?
The Sudan Sorghum silage crop that has been carefully produced for the Kenyan climate offers a great alternative to the traditional silage maize crops.
These tall, fast-growing, heat-loving summer annual grasses can be harvested at least three times a year, even during poor rains, making them an affordable, reliant dairy cattle fodder option.
These climate resilient grasses will be grown on farms practicing controlled traffic farming techniques that have been proven to improve the structure and biodiversity of the soil. This in turn allows the land to be more resilient in the face of climate change.
